Healing Your Relationship with Food and Your Body

Eating disorders are complex, serious, and far more common than most people realize, and they can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or body size. Whether you’re living with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, ARFID, poor body image, or have a complicated relationship with food that’s hard to name, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Our therapists are here to help and reaching out is a meaningful first step toward healing.

What can I expect from therapy?

  • Experience greater freedom around food and your body, so your choices feel less overwhelming and more your own.
  • Have more days where your mood isn’t dictated by what you ate or how you look.
  • Develop a healthier, more compassionate relationship with your body.
  • Reduce obsessive thoughts around food, exercise, and appearance.
  • Build practical coping skills to interrupt unhealthy patterns and work toward a more balanced, present daily life.

How do you approach treatment?

Eating disorder treatment at Northside is collaborative and tailored to your individual needs. Our therapists draw on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and intuitive eating principles, and we work from a Health at Every Size (HAES) framework. This means our focus is on your overall wellbeing, not on weight loss or achieving a particular body size. We often work alongside dieticians and other care providers to ensure you’re supported from every angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

See below for some frequently asked questions about eating disorders and body image therapy at Northside Mental Health.

No. If your relationship with food or your body is causing distress or interfering with your daily life, that’s reason enough to reach out. You don’t need a diagnosis to benefit from support.

No, and this is an important misconception to address. Eating disorders affect people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and backgrounds. You cannot determine whether someone is struggling based on their appearance alone.

Our therapists have experience treating anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID, and other patterns of disordered eating. If you’re not sure how to describe what you’re experiencing, we can help you figure it out.

No, our therapists are clinical therapists, not medical doctors. We don’t provide medical monitoring or physical assessments. However, we work closely with a network of medical providers and can connect you with professionals who specialize in that area, collaborating with them to support your overall care.

Yes. We understand that eating disorders affect the whole family, not just the individual. We welcome and value the involvement of parents, partners, and other loved ones as part of the recovery process.

Recovery looks different for everyone. Some clients make significant progress in a relatively short time, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will work with you to shape a plan that fits your needs and goals.
