You Deserve Support Too

What can I expect from these sessions?

  • Learn communication techniques and boundary-setting strategies that allow you to be genuinely supportive without enabling unhealthy patterns.
  • Gain a clearer understanding of your loved one’s diagnosis, treatment, or level of care and what realistic support actually looks like.
  • Develop tools for navigating conflict and difficult conversations with your loved one around their mental health.
  • Maintain your own stability and the health of your relationship during a challenging time.
  • Receive education, context, and practical guidance tailored to your specific situation.

How does this work?

This is not traditional therapy. It’s a skills and communication-focused service designed to give family members and loved ones the tools and guidance they often don’t receive elsewhere. Sessions are available to partners, parents, siblings, and adult children who are trying to support someone through a mental health struggle. We can work alongside existing treatment providers and incorporate recommendations from your loved one’s care team to ensure everyone is moving in the same direction. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Many people come simply because they want to show up better for someone they love and don’t know how.

Frequently Asked Questions

See below for some frequently asked questions about family coaching and consultation at Northside Mental Health.

This service is designed for partners, parents, siblings, and adult children of individuals who are struggling with a mental health concern, whether they are currently in therapy/treatment or not. You and your loved ones don’t need to be in a crisis situation to benefit. If someone you care about is struggling and you’re not sure how to help, this is for you.

No. This is a separate, skills-based service focused on educating and equipping the people around someone in treatment or struggling. Rather than working on the relationship directly, the focus is on giving you the tools, context, and communication strategies to navigate your loved one’s mental health in a healthy and sustainable way.

That’s okay. You can still benefit from support and guidance even if your loved one hasn’t sought help yet. We can provide resources for finding appropriate treatment, discuss different levels of care, and help you figure out how to approach the conversation with your loved one.

Yes. We’re happy to incorporate treatment plans and recommendations from other providers to ensure a consistent, coordinated approach. You don’t have to choose between the two. This service is designed to complement, not replace, whatever care your loved one is already receiving.

Your loved one’s therapy is their space that is focused on their needs, goals, and healing. This service is your space focused on giving you the support, education, and tools that are specific to your role and your experience. Both matter, and both deserve dedicated attention.

Yes. Everything discussed in your sessions is kept strictly private. The only exceptions are legally required situations involving safety concerns, which your therapist will explain clearly at your first appointment.
